The Witch Of Waxahachie By The Numbers

The Witch of Waxahachie makes it rain.

Safe under her railroad bridge, she talks nonsense to her familiar, an ocelot she found while prowling the flatlands one night.

The Witch of Waxahachie is a hundred and fifteen years old,

And one hot babe.

Go ahead,

Say something smart.

You'll be green and living in the mud down where the cat tails grow, never to go home again.

The Witch of Waxahachie knows fifty-two medicinal roots,

Can make two hundred and twelve powders for spells

And a mean cup of tea.

Her eyes are black.

She can hook a squirrel skull through an open pick-up truck window going by at sixty-five in the dark.

She can imitate the calls of owls and crows, the howls of coyotes, and the sigh of a righteous woman about to fall.

The Witch of Waxahachie has been married to five different men,

All of them buried after midnight at the crossroads of Rural Route 5 and Grange Hall Road.

She has loved just once,

Given her dusky-feathered heart to a woman who made sure she would never forget her,

And then left.

"She loved the magic, not me," the Witch of Waxahachie confides to her ocelot.

She is a hundred and fifteen years old,

And one hot babe.

She will not love again.

  1. This is WICKEDLY wonderful! I dont know where to start! But I could do with a cup of her tea right about now:) I simply love it, with a great big cackle!Speaking as someone who really IS 115 years old, hee hee!Love the hooking a squirrel skull thru a pickup window (havent tried THAT yet! THAT would startle the rednecks who live around these parts!!!!) "dusky feathered heart" is simply BRILLIANT! (did someone once say you write your best poems during heartbreak? I believe it may be true!)

Let's see who falls in love again first - the 115 year old witch - or me - I'd say we're neck 'n neck for NOT falling again, ever :)(throwing squirrel skulls not being too conducive to attracting visitors)

GREAT and wonderfully amusing writing which still says a lot underneath the wicked sharp humour. I so love this poem.

I count too many brackets in this post- but you get the idea.....I love it!!!!!!

  2. "She can imitate the calls of owls and crows, the howls of coyotes, and the sigh of a righteous woman about to fall." -- now that is true character and beautiful poetry.

And is their hotness after aged 20? You betcha!

Another gorgeous poem, Shay. Am I starting to sound completely redundant?

I just love reading you, it's like crack to me.

in fact, this may have just fallen into co-dependant relationship status.

  8. You have one of the most unique poetry voices I've ever read. Your twist on things is so "out there" that it is like hanging onto a star to see what the rest of the universe looks like. In other words, I sorta liked this just a little bit! :)

  11. That would be so cool to be 115 years old and look so young. The tales one could tell - like the Witch of Waxahatchie!

  14. hmmm after these lines,

    "Go ahead,

    Say something smart.

You'll be green and living in the mud down where the cat tails grow, never to go home again."

Well, now I can't say anything smart. I don't look good in any shade of green and I'm not so fond of mud:~)

Seriously, great poem Shay. I like the WoW:~)
