Bartleby the Personal Computer

Like Melville's Bartleby the Scrivener, my ancient comp has been increasingly apt to respond to requests that it do its usual tasks with an uninspired "I prefer not to." And like Custer's Indian scouts, it further decided, yesterday morning, that "it is a good day to die." And so it did.

I am at the library tapping this out, and it may be a bit before I can trade enough ambergris or animal pelts to acquire a netbook or something to get back here with. Until then, I am a library rat and will check in as often as I am able.

Shay, back to the stone age

PS--please feel free to check out my "best of" list on the sidebar, if you need a Shay poem and no one is here at the counter.

  1. have no idea what you are up to in that book-cave, but whatever that is, I wished to tell you HI, and hugs and good luck and

  2. I love that "taking the bitter with the sour". The universe is great at dumping little "extras" on us in the midst of Already-Enough-Going-On. No computer: the worst loss of all for a writer. But we shall sashay down your list of "best of's" when the withdrawal tremors start - hope that netbook arrives soon. Meanwhile, keep a pen handy!

  5. Another reason to love libraries - they keep us connected when our computers get a mind of their own and decide to go AWOL!

In the meantime, make sure you have a lovely pen and paper nearby to capture all your amazing thoughts...and skip the anger-driven ones geared towards computers cuz I hear they share information :)

  9. Ahhh, now At The Library (post after this,) makes more sense.

My little computer is so slow too. But the library ones are super fast, I go there often. Sometimes with a picnic, wine in my Starbucks cup.

Blessing to your computer. I've heard they don'tlast forever, and am finding that true.

And What the Heck with not being able to read Wordpress blogs? The library kicking you out?
