There are doves in the rocks--
In my walls they are sealed--
The whole house may lift away and wheel.
There are snakes in the snow,
Torpid and dull--
"How soft and thin are suede boots and skin."
Late last night and the night before,
Little robbers at my door...
I am Dorothy,
I am Eve--
Afraid to stay--
Afraid to leave.

If I was there and I was that way, I would love you.
That has such a ghostly feel. I'd be afraid to stay or leave, too.
Moody and eerie, with the measured allegoric opening stanzas followed by the dark and twisty refrain-echo of the Tommyknockers/robbers allusion (probably one of the scariest folk tales/Stephen King books ever)fitting in perfectly.
Once again you make the normal just a mask for something else and the emotional trials by fire and dilemmas of life archetypical and haunting.
Wonderful. I read this one out loud. Twice.
SO powerful and haunting....afraid to stay and afraid to leave. Fantastic writing!
Powerful indeed... but also very fragile
As one of my favorite poems EVER is D.H. Lawrence's snake, I ADORE this one. LOVE it. And I hate snakes so that is really saying something.
Beautiful and sad and fish out of waterfully wonderful.

The last stanza blew me away!!!
I also prefer to read aloud. The mystery of the doves and the snakes, a conundrum, yet very satisfying.
You are wise not to go. And wise not to stay. :) A haunting piece!
Little robbers should be shot. I love the last verse because sometimes I am Dorothy and more times than not I am Eve.
the whole thing captivates, but the last stanza was my favorite :)
tight...love that last stanza as well...rolls right off the tongue...
The rhyme (which is awesome) plays off the words brilliantly.
I agree that last stanza is just awesome! I love the snakes in the snow. Heck--I just love the whole poem!

YOu just get better and better. Gosh I love your words.
Wonderful :-)
However, you could anchor that house down, take the wheels off the trailer and stay a while ;-)
Simple

Go or stay, always a dilemma...
The image of snakes in the snow is so gut level wrong that it's like a slap in the face. Very cool.
you're good. very.
My god girl...butter drips off of that last stanza
Yup, that last stanza did it for me too. Dorothy and Eve in one thought, now that is unique!
Inspired, truly.
