Michigan Love Story

You are cold, I said,

But so beautiful that the darkness hovers near you with all of her stars--

Returning always, helpless with desire.

I am a rocky shore, you said.

Receive me, moon-drawn and rhythmic like a pulse--

I will turn your certainties to sand.

If I am a rocky shore, I said,

Then I offer you surrender smooth as an angel's thigh--

Marbled with devotion and hopelessness.

Come, you said, kiss me for the high,

A little less each time--

Until, finally, I close over you and take you into my blue, barely-beating depths

To be un-born,

Forever,

As my lover.

  1. HOL-EE COW!!!!! Your love poems just SLAY me. "surrender smooth as an angel's thigh". Oh my God. And "marbled with devotion and hopelessness."

  2. Dark and elegant, and the metaphor of emotional depths and dark water, the images of surrender and fading warmth, drowning and loss, play out perfectly in this cold, rhythmic "moon drawn' embrace "...a little less each time..." Cold in every way. Fine writing, Shay.

  4. I love the use of color, dark but vibrant with your choice of words. Nice.

  5. I love the idea of surrendering/succumbing at the end...also, you had certainties turn to sand. It would be more predictable/obvious to have one's UNcertainties turn to sand, but you gave us the unexpected. Bravo!

  10. "To be un-born,
    Forever,
    As my lover."
Now, that says something about becoming someone's lover, Shay.
    Gorgeous piece.

  14. I'm continually impressed with your work. It's far and above my most recent work entitled "I Found Jesus In The Dairy Section". You may think I'm joking, but you'd be surprised ;-)

  15. Ah, cold indeed! That lover is frosty and dangerous, squandering the "I" into dust. And the hopelessly devoted "I" surely should run like hell. But I suppose she won't. Nope, she'll stick around for the soul-sucking kisses like the rest of us. ;) Love it!

  21. Who would not repeck yer poetic naychur? You write like a swoon of a dream on a beach on the moon rising from the deepest of love's seas. Dunno how else to say it. You did it all. If you can love half as well as your words for it, lucky, lucky is the world. The pic is perfect, too.- Brendan

  24. I love how you put words together. These lines were favorites,

"I am a rocky shore, you said.
Receive me, moon-drawn and rhythmic like a pulse--
I will turn your certainties to sand."

I really liked the last line. The idea of certainties becoming sand.
